When Michael’s family decided to throw him a surprise 50th, it came together fast — and the ask was big: turn an ordinary Newton ballroom into a celebration worthy of the milestone. Joseph of Catering by Andrew led the effort and brought Siagel Productions in to transform the space top to bottom, into an evening-inspired soirée — in the middle of the afternoon.
Boston Event Production: Turning an Afternoon Into an Evening Soirée
The room needed real beautification, so we draped the entire ballroom and blacked out every window. The result was instant: the moment guests walked in, an afternoon party felt like an evening soirée, with no daylight to break the spell. Energized intelligent lighting brought movement, color and depth across the space, washing the draping in rich tones and giving an ordinary ballroom a completely new atmosphere.
A Piano-Key Feature Wall and a Live Pianist Front and Center
The design carried a piano motif throughout. One full wall alternated black and white draping into a piano-key feature, and a live pianist performed front and center on a raised, spotlit stage — a true focal point for the room. A custom “Happy 50th Michael” display tied the theme together, pairing a grand piano with a nod to the night’s casino energy, all lit for effect.
Blue Steel Lounge, Share Tables and a Room Built for Casino Night
Siagel Productions layered in a Blue Steel lounge — deep blue velvet seating and hammered-steel coffee tables accented with red centerpieces — alongside high white share tables and ghost stools that gave 150 guests plenty of room to gather, mingle and eat. Casino tables brought the interactive energy, with craps, roulette and blackjack keeping the celebration lively from start to finish.
A Surprise Worth Remembering, Down to a Piano-Shaped Cake
Catering by Andrew handled the food experience for the 150 guests, from the buffet’s dramatic red tropical florals to passed gazpacho shooters, while the personal touches landed the milestone — including a custom piano-shaped cake finished with Michael’s “M S” monogram. From blacked-out windows and full draping to a live pianist and a room full of casino energy, Michael’s surprise 50th turned an ordinary afternoon into an unforgettable evening — exactly the kind of full-scale transformation Siagel Productions loves to produce, and a standout example of Boston event production and design.
