Add On's and Upgrades – Do I REALLY need them?

September 23rd, 2009 | No Comments »

Do I really need anything extra to add to my MC/DJ?  I’m fine with the package I have.  The MC should be able to keep everyone busy.

I’m sure this question has crossed your mind once or twice as you have entered the Bar Mitzvah planning mode!

I want you to answer these 3 questions:

  1. Are your adults a more laid back group and you don’t expect to dance very much?
  2. Are your son/daughter’s friends more reserved and on the quiet side?
  3. Is your event in the afternoon?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you are not alone and we have a solution for you!  Adding onto your package is something that you may need to consider.

1. If your guests are on the laid-back side, something like a photo booth or a caricature artist may loosen them up.  People are generally intimidated by being the center of attention and certainly do not want to be the first to hit the dance floor.  Thus, alternative entertainment would be available to let people know ”hey, this is a party!!”

2. It is not uncommon for a 13 year old to be a little more reserved and on the quiet side.  Surprisingly, lighting and party favors are very important from a child’s standpoint.  If it doesn’t look like a party or feel like a party, it’s going to be hard to convince people that it actually is a party.  From personal experience, a child that is shy and really doesn’t want to be seen dancing may change their mind if they have on a pink boa, gangster hat and some funky sunglasses.  You will truly be amazed.

3. If your event is in the afternoon, this is challenge that you should be aware of and certainly plan ahead for.  The goal of an afternoon party is to make it feel like an evening party; and although your MC will do everything in his power to get people dancing, it is easier said than done.

If your event in is in a room with lots of windows and you are going to get a lot of natural light in the room, it is in your best interest to consider dance floor decor,  extra entertainment, dance risers, and party favors.

Siagel Party Planning started the 2009-2010 Bar/Bat Mitzvah season with a BANG! We had a fashionable Bat Mitzvah girl on our hands who wanted her party to be chic but edgy at the same time.

We first started with the color palate of hot pink and black and then added feather details to make this party fit for our in-vogue 13 year old. With plasma screens, pink uplighting, giant feather towers – not to mention boas, sequins and glitter (OH MY!) – this Bat Mitzvah girl had some SERIOUS edge!

To add a bit of softness to the decor, we used elements of surprise throughout the room. My favorite piece is the satin bow tied around the black napkins.

Everybody say cheese! The hottest novelty item out right now is the Vintage Coney Island Photo Booth. Grab a few friends or family members and step back in time with our vintage booth.

Go a step further and add a Scrapbook Table. Cut your strip in half and create a memory page for the Guest of Honor. This is an experience that’s full of fun, laughter and your guests will never forget this timeless party favor!

Last weekend, the whole Siagel team attended a Bat Mitzvah with a photo booth. The Scrapbook Table made the party. The Guest of Honor got to take home a great keepsake while we took pictures all night without worrying about losing our digital cameras!

"It's OK to spend a few extra dollars on your Bar/Bat Mitzvah!"

A bar mitzvah dad called me before his son’s celebration asking my advice for how to make his son’s party more special.  Since he was already planning to show a video montage of his son on a small screen, I suggested he upgrade to our double plasma screens.  I felt that they would offer a more dramatic presentation of his video, which would enhance the viewing experience for his guests, and would add to the excitement of the party since we could play cool videos and pictures of his guests on the screens throughout the night! He felt uncomfortable about spending the extra money for this, so he consulted his rabbi to see what he thought about the situation.

“Rabbi” he said. “How in good conscious, can I rationalize spending extra money for video screens for my kids party? Am I going over the top?  Am I losing the spirituality of the moment? What will my friends think?”

The Rabbi replied, “Bob, how many times do you have the opportunity to have all the people who matter the most in your life, in one room, celebrating your son, your family, and your Judaism?   What better time is there to spend a few extra dollars? “

Bob added the plasma screens. He called me back the Monday following the party to tell me how wonderful the party was, and how much everyone loved the screens. He said that his rabbi was right.  The extra money he spent on the video screens was well worth it.

It was a night that his son, family, and his friends will never forget.
